Stratford Star

Congregational youths partner with Project Linus

On Sunday, April 3, members of Project Linus joined with First Congregational Church of Stratford’s Pilgrim Fellowship Youth Group for a fleece blanket making party.

Project Linus is a non-profit organization dedicated to “Providing Security Through Blankets” for ill or traumatized children and teens.

Fifteen members of the youth group joined volunteers and made blankets during their weekly gathering. Volunteers instructed the children how to cut the material, make the outer fringe and put the pieces together while talking about the joy and comfort their efforts will bring.

“Our meetings are always a mixture of worship activities, community service and playing games and having fun. The kids really enjoyed making the blankets and they appreciate they will go to a good cause,” Youth Director Tammy Langston said.

Inspired by a picture of a 3-year-old cancer patient holding her security blanket, Project Linus was begun in 1995 by Karen Loucks. Nationally, Project Linus has donated more than 3 million handmade blankets to help comfort children in need in hospitals, shelters and hospices.

Project Linus has more than 400 chapters in the United States.

Project Linus was named after the security blanket-toting character from the Peanuts comic strip.

First Congregational Church has services every Sunday at 10 a.m. Sunday School is open to children in pre-school through eighth grade.

The Junior and Senior Pilgrim Fellowship programs are open to children in grades 6-12.
