Congregational Church starts 25th year of Lenten Fish Dinners

The First Congregational Church of Stratford began the 25th anniversary of its Lenten Fish Dinners Friday, March 11. What began back in 1987 as a simple get-together and church fundraiser has blossomed into an annual fixture in Stratford Center each Friday during Lent.

“I can remember when we first started and it was a simple dinner of fried fish and French fries,” said Bill Wilson, the chief organizer and food preparer since the beginning. “But it also provided a nice outlet for families, giving them a chance to get out of the house, have a good time and a good meal.”

The menu gradually expanded, first adding baked fish for those who were watching their weight. Then specialty items were added, such as clams and crab cakes. Now the menu includes scallops and shrimp. All dinners come with a choice of baked potato or fries, a dessert and a beverage. Prices range from $9 to $14, depending on the item; senior citizens can eat for a discounted price of $8. Children under 10 eat free and can choose a hot dog and fries.

Wilson spoke proudly as he recalled the longevity of the event and all the teamwork it takes.

“We go through 40 to 50 pounds of fresh West Coast Cod each week, supplied by Westport Fishing Company in Bridgeport,” Wilson said. “It’s a lot of work and everyone pitches in. Food has to be picked up, prepared and served. There are dozens of volunteers who wait tables, assist in the cooking, setup and cleanup. We tend to get about 120 guests each week so there’s a lot of work to be done.”

The Lenten Fish Dinners have developed a loyal following over the years, extending beyond members of the church.

“It has become quite a family oriented affair,” Wilson said. “Years ago, there was a couple who met at the dinner one week and agreed to a date the following week at the next dinner. It is quite common for people to stay well after they’re through eating and just socialize.”

In its heyday, a good night could generate 350 guests, but Wilson said that is when there were fewer alternative venues and almost none in Stratford Center. Still, the success has prompted other churches to meet with organizers at First Congregational Church as they have looked to start similar fundraisers.

Proceeds from the dinners go to the missions of the church.

Dinner hours are 4:30 to 7 p.m. each Friday, March 11 through April 15, at the church, 2301 Main St.
